Finding Descendants of Phillips in Augusta County, Virginia

I am working with a group of volunteers to find descendants of early Phillips settlers who were in Rockbridge, Augusta and other Counties of Virginia. By combining generations of research with DNA testing, we are making great progress in matching families in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and other states.

Currently, there are quite a few projects for DNA testing, such as the Family Tree DNA Surname Project, and at least one lab that does the testing free of charge. If you are a male with the Phillips surname, I hope you will consider joining one of these projects.

In the past year or so, we have tested descendants of Phillips who were in Amherst County, Virginia, in the 1700s and the results have confirmed much of our research. There are still a few lines in the Amherst/Nelson area and in Rockbridge/Augusta County that we need to identify. Some of these Phillips were descendants of Phillips who came down the valley from Pennsylvania or Maryland.

DNA testing has given us a new direction for our research. Please email me at vapsmith@ntelos.net for more information.
