I've been waiting since "o dark thirty" for the mail to get here today and it got here a little bit ago. I finally got what I'd been waiting for! And the answer is ... <drum roll> CERTIFICATE OF MARRIAGE DATE OF MARRIAGE: JULY 13, 1892 PLACE OF MARRIAGE: CHARLOTTE COUNTY, VIRGINIA The husband was SAM'L. R. TRENT who was born and living in Charlotte County, VA. He was shown as SINGLE and his parents were JOEL and ANN TRENT. The wife was CORA A. ELLINGTON who was born and living in Charlotte County, VA. She was shown as SINGLE and her parents were RICHARD and CATHERINE ELLINGTON. For me, this clears up the whole question of Cora Ann. The certificate shows that her name was recorded as Ellington and that her parents were Richard and Catherine. Just as important is the indication of her status. The choices were SINGLE, WIDOWED, OR DIVORCED. She indicated SINGLE which negates the speculation that she was married to Joseph T.A. Ellington. This marriage certificate combined with the 1860 census shows us that Cora and Joseph were brother and sister and not married to each other. Since Cora was not married at the time, her sons, Albert and Luther, were named correctly as Ellington's. We will probably speculate forever as to who their father was and never get any further than we are right now. My personal feeling is that Samuel Trent could very well have been their father. Albert went to great lengths to make sure his name was changed to Trent early in his life, yet Luther (the younger of the two brothers) apparently didn't mind one way or the other. Albert also "took care of" other Trent's and their family when he could/needed to and was close with them. Yet, other than his mother, I haven't been able to find anything about him in regards to the Ellington's. I hope this information helps everyone as much as it's helped me ...
