I saw your posting at the Clarke County Genfourm site just this am. Hope the following helps you.. Don Royston Clarke Courier (VA) dated Wednesday April 18, 1900: EDWARD V. KERCHEVAL Mr. E.V. Kercheval, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Berryville, died Tuesday evening of last week at abut 5 o'clock. Mr. Kercheval's health had been impaired for several years and his death, which was not unexpected, was due to complications of diseases. Mr. Kercheval was born in Martinsburg, WV, about 76 years ago. He came to Berryville and located, opening a merchant tailoring establishment. His business flourished and he laid aside quite a competence. He was elected and served several years as deputy sheriff of Clarke County. When the Civil War broke out, he cast his fortunes with the Confederacy and enlisted in Gen. Turner Ashby's Cavalry, and served as quartermaster. When the immortal Ashby fell, he left the army and returned to his home here. He then followed the pursuits of farming until his health began to fail some years ago. Mr. Kercheval had the reputation of being one of the best gardners in this section, and the products of his garden were always acknowledged the finest raised around here. Mr. Kercheval was the son of the late John and Courtney Kercheval. His paternal grandfather was a French Huguenot and was forced to flee from France to avoid persecution. He was a cousin of the late Samuel Kercheval, the author of Kercheval's History of the Valle of Virginia, which is an acknowledged reference book for matters pertaining to the early history of the Shenandoah Valley. He has a brother, Mr. Towner Kercheval, who lives in Fellowsville, WV, and has a wide family connection in the West. Miss Lizzie Kercheval, of this place, is a sister of the deceased, and two sisters -- Mrs. Margaret Young, of Greensburg, and Mrs. Mary Marsiella, of Auspolis, survive him and reside in Indiana. Mr. Kercheval leaves four children - two sons, Messrs. J.W. and E.V. Kercheval Jr., and two daughters, Miss Bettie Kercheval and Mrs. Marv Barr, all of whom reside here. Funeral services were held from his late residence and his body laid to rest in Green Hill Cemetery. Messrs. J.W. and E.V. Kercheval wish to thank the community for the many expressions of sympathy and acts of kindness shown them during their bereavement. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notify Administrator about this message?
