"Bettie" is Elizabeth Burgess [later Whitescarver] (1825/27-1895), daughter of Alexander Burgess Sr. (1794-1870) of Rappahannock Co., VA; Walter Burgess (1850-1925) is her nephew, the son of her brother, Edward Burgess (1816-1883) of Culpeper Co., VA. The dates of birth are frequently "off" for this family. These lines derive from Garner Burgess (1726?-1790) of Fauquier Co., VA, through his elder surviving son, Edward Burgess (1764?-1798). All of the Edward Burgesses in this branch of the family used the nickname "Edwin," probably to help distinguish them from their many cousins of the same name.

Bettie's elder sister, Henrietta Burgess (1821?-1887+), had married B(enjamin) James Shumate in 1843, leaving three children: Julia Mary (born about 1844, married Delaware Weaver); Nancy Worth "Nannie" (born about 1846, married Pawhatan Ellis Jones), and Zachary Taylor (born about 1848). Hence the connection between the families. Also, Alexander Burgess's sister, another Elizabeth Burgess (this one called "Betsy" [1789-1821]), married Thomas Jacobs and had (among others) a son, Col. Edward Burgess Jacobs (1807-1891), who married Mary Ann Shumate in 1834.
