Charles Landon (Beale) Carter and wife Ann Steuart

Looking for help with any information to put some more “meat” on this family and also information about their home “Ridgeville” which was located along Goose Creek between Upperville and Delaplane in Fauquier County.

First I have to say that while I see the name Beale used as a middle name by a number of genealogists, I have yet to find it on any documents associated with this Charles. Indeed, his signature is always given as Charles L. Carter.

Charles Landon Carter was born 24 Feb 1774 and died sometime between Feb and Sept 1824 in Fauquier county and probably at his home of Ridgeville. He was the son of Landon Carter, Jr, and his wife Judith Lucy Fauntleroy. Charles Landon Carter married Ann Steuart, the daughter of Hugh Steuart and Ann Orr in Feb 1801.

The couple had these children:
Susan Catherine Carter (1801 – 1836). Never married.
Judith Anne Carter (1804-1861) married her cousin Edwin Carter, the son of John Fauntleroy Carter, Sr. and Jane Edwards.
Hebe Carter (1807 - ) who married George William Ashby 10 Aug 1827 in Fauquier Co.
Charles Landon Carter (1810 – 1842) Sadly I’ve not done much with Charles. I believe he may have died unmarried.
Mary Fauntleroy Carter (1813-1835) Never married.
Marion Steuart Carter (1815-1844), married Lt. Hillary H. Rhodes 21 May 1834 in Georgetown, District of Columbia. Marion died in Loudoun County and Hillary died enroute to St. Louis.
Duncan Steuart Carter (1818 – 1881). There is no evidence he ever married.
Ellen Moore Carter (1820 – after 1891) m. William Brenton Boggs in 1842.

This family also has close ties to the Graysons, Tidballs, Ashbys and it is said Hugh Steuart may have been a relative of J.E.B. Stuart although I somewhat discount that.

Ridgeville was apparently part of the land that Charles Landon Carter inherited along with a brother when their father Landon Jr. died. At one time Ridgeville encompassed at least 1900 acres so it should show somewhere.

Any help greatly appreciated

Jackie
