Wally,

You neglected to include the names for the two women of interest, so it is impossible to locate them in connection with Samuel or John. The most I can do is focus on Samuel. From the 1850 census for Clarke County, VA, it looks like Samuel W. Clingan was the son of “McLain” and Juliet Clingan. In that census, McLain is incorrectly indexed as “Melanie.” Also, in the marriage records for Fauquier County there is recorded the marriage of McLean Clingan to Juliet A. Wilson. Marriage date was 11 Jan 1845. A “McLane” “Clinger” also served as a Private in the Confederate army (Company D, 122 Militia Infantry Regiment).

By 1860, McLane Clingham (note spelling) is in Clarke County, VA, with an apparently new wife:

-- Clingham, McLane. 52, Carpenter, Born VA.
-- Clingham, Virginia, 28, born VA.
-- Clingham. Mary E., 15, born VA.
-- Clingham, Samuel W, 10, born VA.
-- Clingham. William H., 4, born VA.
-- Clingham, Thomas F. 3, born VA.
-- Clingham, Ellinor, 1, born VA

By the time of the 1870 Virginia census, there is this family living in Greenway Twp, Clarke County. Note that the family name is spelled Clinghan:

-- Clinghan, McLean, 52, carpenter, born VA.
-- Clinghan, Virginia, 46, keeping house, born VA, can read, but cannot write.
-- Clinghan, Thomas F.,12, born VA, cannot read or write.
-- Clinghan, John, 10, born VA, cannot read or write.
-- Clinghan, Turner(?) J., 7, born VA.
-- Clinghan, James S., 4, born VA.
-- Clinghan, Robert S., 3, born VA.

In that census there are check marks in the “Whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, or idiotic” column for Virginia, Thomas and John. But I suspect these are merely counting ticks since a total of 16 check marks are listed for that page – an unusually high number. The column immediate before the “Deaf” column asks whether the person can write. There are 16 checks for that column. This reinforces the notion that the censustaker was more than likely using the “Deaf” column to count the total who cannot write.

By 1880, Virginia has married John Folk and is living with him and four of her children in Greenway Twp, Clarke County, VA:

-- Folk, John, 60 Carpenter, born PA
-- Folk, Virginia, 57, Keeping House, born VA.
-- Clingan, John B., 19, son, Laborer, born VA.
-- Clingan, Thomas, 17, son, laborer, born VA.
-- Clingan, James S., 14, son, laborer, born VA.
-- Clingan, Robert S., 12, son, born VA.

By 1900, a John B. Clingan is living at 442 West Church Street, Hagerstown, Washington County, MD. This is likely the same John as found in 1880:

-- Clingan, John B., born Oct 1860, age 39, married for 18 years, born VA, locomotive fireman.
-- Clingan, Mary A., wife, born Mar 1860, age 40, married for 18 yrs, mother of 2 and 2 children are living, born DC, parents born Ireland
-- Clingan, Harry Mc. (McLean?), son, born Jan 1885, age 15, born VA, student.
-- Clingan, Mary M., dau, born Aug 1880, age 10, born VA, student.

For 1910, 1920, and 1930 John B. is still living in Hagerstown on West Church Street, but by 1920 he is listed as a widower. By 1930, daughter Mary has married Murry Bloom and she and her husband are living with John.

“McLean” may have been related to the Clingans of Pennsylvania. A Thomas Clingan married an Elizabeth McLean in the late 1700’s. It’s just a guess, but Elizabeth’s maiden name may have been the source for McLean’s name.

Finally, the WWI card completed by Harry Mc. Clingan shows his middle name is “McClain” and his date of birth as Jan 3, 1885. He is living on West Church street in Hagerstown. While “McLean” is spelled multiple ways, the odds are good that they are one and the same person.

Good luck with your research.
