John Haley (Healey) 1732-1787

  of 1596

I have done considerable research into the Haleys of Fauquier and want to make everybody aware almost all of them are descendents of one man:John Haley (1732-1787). THis family is entirely English in origin, the actual original spelling of the name is Healey (John and his youngest son Abner both signed their name this way.) The origins of John are not cetain, more than like he is the son of a Richard Haley who left a will in Westmoreland County in Montross Virginia in 1774 (Unfortunately there are no other mentions of Richard Haley in Westmoreland County VA records.) The earliest mention of John is in 1752 in Prince William County when he was accused of stealing a horse. He served in the French and Indian War for three years, here is more info about that: French & Indian Wars 1754-1763

Size Roll of Capt. Thomas Waggener's Company

Sept. 19, 1756 contains the following description:

JOHN HALY, 5'3 1/2", 24, dark, Virginia, planter, enlisted by Lt. Thomas Bullet. Physical description includes: remarkable thick legs, full face, and black straight hair.

Size Roll of Capt. Thomas Waggener's Company at Fort Holland in the South Branch August 1757

contains the following:

John Hally, from Prince William County, 24, 5'3 1/2", dark, Virginia planter.

JOHN HALY, variously spelled HALLY, HAWLEY, HAWLY, HOLLEY and HOLLEYS, remained with Capt. Thomas Waggener from 1754-1758 when entries stopped.

Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Vol. II

John eventually married a woman named Mary and had the following children:
1. Anthony Haley 1759-1842. Died in Ohio,
2. William Haley.
3. John Haley Jr. Married Peggy Jett in 1783. Still alive in 1810 census, Son Daniel later relocated to Harrison County, KY by 1820 census.
4. Daniel Haley. Died as a drummer boy at American Revolution battle in 1780 or 1781. Served under Captain later Chief Justice John Marshall.
5. Febea Haley (1770-?). Married James Garret in Fauquier County. Still alive with her Husband in Lewis County, VA census of 1850 aged 80.
6. David Haley (1775-?) Married Martha Wigfield. Alive in 1850 census aged 75 in Fauquier County census.
7. Joseph Haley. Married in Fauquier County and later in 1849 in Lewis County, VA. Alive in Lewis County census in 1850 aged 70.
8. Richard Haley married Nancy Mcbee in Fauquier County. Moved to Harrison County KY by 1810. Deceased by 1820. Had one son.
9. Abner Haley (1780-1846)(death date on tombstone is wrong. Bracken County court records indicate death as 1846, not 1844. Wife Molly Jett Haley died in 1853 according to court records, not 1860). Married Mary (Polly) Jett January 1803 in Fauquier County Virginia, in Bracken County, KY with father in law John Jett and family by 1806. Had seven sons and seven daughters.

Surviving members of family received land grant for brother Daniel's service in the American Revoluion in 1834(father John received 100 acres in 1783.) Awarded to Phebe, Joseph, David, and daughter of deceased brother William's daughter. Anthony and Abner mentioned but assumed dead.

This is all I know off the top of my head. I am obsessive about this and the Fact That I have Aspergers helps contribute to this. I am at a stand still where to go with this family. I have been tried in vain for years trying to find a document linking John to Richard or anybody else. In addition, I have totally unable to find a marriage record for John. Virginia srarted keeping vital records in 1853. There are no death certificates for either Phebe or Joseph in Lewis County, West Virginia. The death certificate would reveal the parents, thus Mary John's wife's maiden name might be Listed.I think there might be a death certificate for David Haley still in Fauquier County. There are a group of Haleys thoroughly researched in Orange County Virginia, but they apparently are no relation to the Fauquier County Haleys. Since John was granted the right to build a mill in Fauquier County, there is some indication the Haleys might have been involved in distilling, since John's son Abner and grand son Porter later ran distilleries in Bracken County, KY. I did locate the original log cabin that Mary, Richard, and Abner lived in still standing in Fauquier County at the foot of Rattlesnake Mountain, partly thanks to the help of the late John K Gott. A family called Harrell bought it after the Haleys left and still own it 200 years later, the location is now called Harrell's Corners. The standing structure perfectly corresponds to the dimensions of the structure built in the priginal Denny Martin Fairfax lease to Mary Haley in 1792 or 1793. I have also never received a satisfactory info as to why there are no tombstones in Fauquier County pre 1800. Graveyards exist in New England from the 1600''s.

I would love to write and hear from others who might be relatives of mine or who are especially reseraching tthis family. All further research has to be dobe under the name Healey not Haley, as Healey is the correct name. I specially want to hear from others who might have more info, or documents or original family papers or bibles tied to the Haleys (Healeys) of Fauquier County, especially pre 1850. My mame is Christopher Haley and I reside in Milford Ohio outside of Cincinnati. Have a great evening, everybody.
