Dee, I have the 1850 census myself. Thank you so much for your very thorough approach. And I did finally manage to search through the McKay lines, one at a time, and only found a couple of Smiths. Here is what I found:
Job. McKay marr. Ann Smith

Joseph Steer Robinson, m. Rebecca Jane Smith,
xxxxx1. Nenah Love Robinson,
xxxxx2. Mary Anna "Mollie" Robinson,
xxxxx3. Archibald Smith Robinson, Cont'd here
xxxxx4. Charles Hunter Robinson,

310113. Archibald Smith Robinson, m. Evaline Marshall "Phoebe" Ferguson,
xxxxx1. Rebecca Smith Robinson,
xxxxx2. Joseph Edward Robinson,
xxxxx3. William Archibald Robinson,
xxxxx4. Mary Love Robinson, Cont'd here (in the Mackay Family Record)

So far as I know, these are not familiar names to me.

I also read your posts on your cousin's forum regarding computer genealogy. I do respect your commitment to accuracy. I think it is good to warn people of the misinformation that is out there. I have posted some information obtained from others, but at least I acknowledge who I got it from. On the other hand, as you say, probably I shouldn't post anything that I haven't obtained firsthand myself. I have been chagrined to see that people have lifted stuff from my database and posted it in theirs complete with my spelling mistakes etc., and they provide no source information; in some cases I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who has gone into the courthouse and actually dug up the marriage bond and photocopied it.
I am especially concerned when people post information about living people on the Internet. I try to leave off the names of people who are still living.

I applaud you for trying to get a discussion going about standards and accuracy and responsibility. I am quite sure you do not approve of some of the info I have posted, but I am willing to reconsider what I will and will not post on my site and in my databases. I hope that others are willing to think about what you've said as well. It is terrible that you found inaccurate info had found its way into LDS! By the way, I am the only one I know who has researched my Smiths as far back as I have. And the only person who has given me any other information besides what I have found myself is a trained researcher that I hired who actually sent me photocopies of the original records. Nonetheless, I am still speculating on a few things with these Smiths, such as what a middle initial might stand for, but I indicate when I'm asking it as a possible question.

On my other lines, there are quite a few families that I did not go back beyond 1850 and from there back I relied on information from other people.

Re the information on John F. Smith and Hopewell Friends: this came from a newfound very distant cousin; I will try to determine what the sources were before I add that to my website or database.

Thanks again for your championing of accuracy. As you said, there is a difference between doing real research and moving files around on one's computer (and as a computer owner since 1982 or so and builder of websites etc., I can say this as more than a Luddite reaction). Now, what I'm hoping for is this: that we manage to get more old records online as much as possible, so that people CAN access the real thing from their computers and not just copy other people's files without investigating the sources. This is beginning to happen, and I hope that one day many of the originals will be preserved and available online. Maybe if we all vote for candidates who will fund libraries and other institutions that assist in these matters, we'll see increasing progress in this area.

I hope that you keep raising this important issue, Dee. You are a rare find on these forums!
