I Believe Some Records Must Be Lost

3 Question:

1. Mr. Gott talks about how some of the early bans are missing from Hamilton & Leeds Parishes. And how early clerks of these would use pages out of their registries to light their pipes. See his book "Fauquier County Virginia Marriage Bonds 1759-1854"

2. No I would think a second marriage would be recorded just as a first marriage. I know my John Ball first & second marriage are listed in Fauquier Co. VA marriage records, he living in Culpeper at the time. If your different wives lived in different locations perhaps they were married in different counties. My Jacob McKay Sr. was married twice in Frederick Co. VA and once in Loudoun Co. VA.

3. According to Mr. Gott--yes--early church records have been lost. Check State of VA web site: www.lva.lib.va.us/ to see what is still available.

The reason I am now compiling land deeds is to find the parentage of my ancestors where other records have failed me. I have proven my double line from John D. Richards from land deeds.

To your problem, I would say read early deeds. Mr. John K. Gott has compiled land deed 1759-1778, there are references to Maximilian Berryman; but I think you could read the originals for yourself. All compiler miss information.

Check L.D.S. web site on line www.familysearch.org

I wouldn't trust their computer bank, but they have a lot of resources on film you can rent.

Good Luck.
