info on James Thomas Carter - 1842 - 1942

I noticed the messages of James Guthrie and Richard Zieman which note the presence of two unrelated families of Carters' (if I read it correctly). I am one of several people that have been trying to trace back from James Thomas Carter, Jr [1842 - 1942] who was the son of James Thomas Carter and Martha McCann (1822 - 1885). Martha is buried at the First Crossroads Baptist Church at Turbeville, VA. as is her son James Thomas Carter, Jr.
Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate ANY information concerning the senior James Thomas Carter other than his name and that of his wife, Martha. Martha is also buried in the same cemetery as her son. Martha and James T. Carter are noted on a marriage license/certificate issued in 1890 for the second marriage of James Thomas Carter (Jr.)
Can anyone provide any further information on the James Thomas Carter and Martha McCann ancestors?
