I have a transcribed copy of a deed in Edgefield County that has a William Smelley of Isle of Wright selling a slave to an Abel Carson. This deed is dated October 1806. My question are..Who is this William Smelley? Could he be the father of the John Smelley who married Mary Ann Hare? This family moved to Talladega County, Alabama and can be found on the 1860 Talladega County census. And why was he selling a slave in Edgedield County, South Carolina?
