Bingo! I stand corrected judging by that 1770 map; it is further north. Seward's Swamp would have to be today's Vellines Swamp because of its position with respect to the prominent northwestern bend of the Blackwater River between Mill Swamp on the north and Seward's on the south. Looks like a part of today's Mill Swamp is backed up into Rattlesnake Swamp reservoir, but to me there is little doubt based on John Henry's map that what he was calling Seward's Swamp is now Vellines Swamp. Of course this places the land Simon Haile. On 6 Jan 1800, Simon Haile sold 100 acres of his land to Joseph Moody of Isle of Wight County, land on Seward’s Swamp, Quarter Branch, Martin’s Br., and joining Moody’s land. Wit: Jordan Parr, Jesse Turner, and Wm. Turner; recorded 6th Jan 1800. Signed: Simon Haile. Isle of Wight Co. Deed Bk. 18, p. 404, FHL Microfilm 0,032,009. Even earlier, Anthony Mathewes Macoms patented land on Seward’s Sw. in Isle of Wight in 1666: 10 July 1666 Cavaliers and Pioneers, p561, Anthony Mathewes Macoms, 1300 acs. Isle of Wight Co., 10 July 1666, p 519, (637). Upon Sewards Sw., beg. at cor tree of Robt. Williamson &c . Trans. of 26 pers: Lawrence Baker, Lawrence Baker, (2 times) Elizabeth Baker, John Baker, James Baker, Joseph Baker, JNO. MACOMS, James Wilson, Robt. Bruce, Jno. Stoops, Jno. Phillips, James Clarke, And. Overing, Wm. Heate (or Heale), Tho. Powell, James Richards, Ann Reeve, Alice Lee, An Milington, James Downes, Robt. Bennett, Rich. Miller, Jane Goodman, Jno. Dobson, Edwd. Poynter, Rich. Lucas. So, this places Seward's Swamp squarely in the Central Hill area and just north of Pope's Swamp. I am greatly indebted to you for bringing this old map to my attention!
