Karen,
Good morning.
I have done some searching. It seems that Braxton County (county seat is Sutton - formerly Suttonville) was formed in 1836 from parts of other counties. This county was part of Virginia until the Civil War, so you probably want to look at Virginia archives records for him. I think I saw note of a Braxton Historical Society. They could possibly point you to any LOCAL records.
I noticed a Joseph A. Young, wife Mattia and children Lulu and Merle in the 1880 census in Middletown, Henry, Indiana. Is this your man? It indicates that he was born about 1847 in Virginia.
