I'm not related to this family.

1870 - Solomon Howard is listed as 'white' yet the other fammily members are listed as "MU" -mulatto. Listing him as 'white' is most likely a typo on the part of the transcriber due to poor handwriting by the enumerator.

1880 - Solomon is listed as MU.

1880 -
Name: Soloman Howard
Home in 1880: Lead Mines, Wythe, Virginia
Age: 80
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1800
Birthplace: Virginia
Relation to Head of Household: Self (Head)
Spouse's Name: Ann
Father's birthplace: Virginia
Mother's birthplace: Virginia
Marital Status: Married
Race: Mulatto
Gender: Male

Soloman Howard 80, cannot read or write
Ann Howard 50, VA - black, cannot read or write
Ely Howard 17, VA - black, cannot read or write
Callie Howard 15, VA - black, cannot read or write

If Solomon was a slave during the 1850 & 1860 census, he will not be listed on the census record. Only the name of the slave owner was listed. Slaves were listed by age, sex and race. Sometimes the occupation was included. Slaves were not grouped by families.
