I hope to find information on John Hammer Leonard, Malinda Adeline Davis Briggs Leonard, Roscoe Lee Briggs, and Mackey R. Briggs. We don't know much about John Hammer Leonard. He was born in Virginia ca.1867. He married Malinda Adeline Davis in the early 1900s, but I don't have the specific date or place. (This is why I'm not sure he is the same man. Several Family Trees on Ancestry.com state that John Hammer Leonard died in 1900. If that is the case, he can't be our ancestor.) Malinda Adeline Davis was born in June 1868 in North Carolina. I think she died in the 1930s in Jefferson County, Nebraska and was buried in Hollenburg, Washington County, Kansas. Her first husband was Enoch Briggs. (This was his second marriage. His first wife died.) Enoch was born in March 1827 in North Carolina. He was 41 years older than Malinda. She had at least two children with him: a son, Roscoe Lee Briggs (born February 22, 1893 in North Carolina) and a daughter, Mackey R. Briggs (born July 1896). She may have had another daughter, Pearl Nelson. (I got this information by piecing together various censuses. Mackey and Pearl's birth years are the same so I suspect that they are one and the same, but I can't explain the difference in names.) One census stated that John Hammer Leonard was a carpenter. Malinda and he had two sons: 1) John William Leonard who was born July 25, 1908 in Lucy,New Mexico and died July 03, 1981 in Ellsworth, Kansas. (He married Emma Katherine Greer. They were my husband's grandparents.) and 2) Joseph S. Leonard who was born in 1909. My mother-in-law has mentioned a daughter, "Sis," but I haven't found her in a census and don't know her full name. This was probably Mackey/ Pearl. John and Joseph seem to be favorite family names. Our line of John Leonards is: John Hammer Leonard (b. ca. 1867), John William Leonard (1908-1981), John Emmett Leonard (1928-2002), and John Daniel Leonard (born 1959- ). I don't know when or where John Hammer Leonard died. I can't find the family listed in a census later than 1920, however, I think he lived at least into the 1930s. (You'll read why I think this below...) Malinda Adeline's name has been misspelled so many times that it is difficult to find unless one is looking very carefully for it. Since both his wife, Malinda, and his son, John William, were buried in Kansas, I suspect he was also buried there. John William and Emma Katherine divorced. Their daughter is my mother-in-law. She doesn't remember much about the Leonard side of the family. However, she has mentioned happy times in Las Cruces, New Mexico where she visited her grandparents(John Hammer and Malinda) and Uncle Lee. She liked her uncle and named my husband, Michael Lee, after him. Her family lived for a while in Denver, Colorado and Lee Briggs visited them there. She was born in 1925. Since she remembers these visits, I suspect she was 5 years or older during these trips. That is why I think both John Hammer Leonard and Malinda Adeline lived into the 1930s or later. These are small hints, but better than nothing. If anyone can help piece this puzzle together, I would appreciate it.
