Barbara, My grandfather, Tom Crack, had a store in Arlington [Ballston] during the depression and during the war until his death in 1947. It was at the corner of Glebe Road and Columbia Pike. It had saw dust on the floor and cookies in big jars. It was the local grocery store back then. It was about a mile and a half to D.C. I hope this helps.
