Robert Walls/Elizabeth Chapman: Lee County/Smyth County, VA

Hello. I'm looking for any information about Robert Walls and Elizabeth Chapman. Robert Walls is listed many times as having been born in NC. However, he is listed as having been born in VA, too. I can't trace him back before the 1870 census. I've run into a brick wall there. I have found Robert Walls in the 1870 Rich Valley, Smyth, Va census with his wife Elizabeth Chapman Walls. They lived next to Elizabeth's parents: Joseph and Sarah Sallie Chapman and their children.

Elizabeth Chapman Walls must've passed away between 1880 and 1886 because Robert was on the 1900 census in Whitley, Kentucky with his second wife Melvina (listed as Elvina on the census).

Here is what I have:

Robert Walls b. January 1847 or 1848 in either NC or VA.

Married Elizabeth Chapman sometime between 1860 and 1870.

Elizabeth Chapman born abt. 1850 in VA to Joseph Chapman and Sarah Sallie Phipps.

Robert and Elizabeth had these children:
Charles, George, John, Oscar, William, Alice, Edward.

Edward Walls was born in July 1889 in Elliott County, Kentucky to Robert and Elizabeth Walls. So, I know they lived there at that point.

I believe Elizabeth Chapman Walls died between 1889 and 1896.

Robert then married Melvina (Venia) Johnson around 1896 and moved to Whitley, Kentucky where they had children.

Robert and Melvina had these kids:
Daisy May, Maggie, Baker Dunn, and Nannie.

Melvina passed away and Robert Walls was living with his son George Walls and his wife Sarah in Campbell, TN in 1920.

Robert Walls is listed as having been born in NC and VA. I'm not sure which is correct. If anyone has any information, I'd be happy to work with you on this. I appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Amanda
