JEREMIAH CONFUSION WITH LILLINGTON
Posted by: Dorothy Drake (ID *****2062) Date: May 19, 2006 at 14:32:49

When following the ancestry of Mary Vail who married Jonathan Tuthill of Oysterponds and then Goshen, Orange, NY, I found many contradictions among the long line of Jeremiah Vails.
According to posts from other researchers on this forum, my line went from Mary, b 1708, back to Jeremiah and Mary Lillington of North Carolina.

However, I am finding that difficult to believe given that the children of Jeremiah and Mary were born in North Carolina, married NC people and basically remained there. Jeremiah apparently died in Edenton, NC in 1765.

My Mary Vail was certainly not born in North Carolina, but rather in Suffolk county, NY. Her parents were probably of the Oysterponds or Southold group of Vail/Veale families there, as per the 1698 census of Southold.

Is there any solid evidence that the Jeremiah Vail who went to North Carolina and Married Mary Lillington, was in fact the son of Jeremiah and Anna Hampton Moore of Southold, Long Island? What proofs are there?

Could it be that the Jeremiah Vail who married Mary Lillington was a descendant of Thomas or Moses Vail and not of the first Jeremiah?

Thanks for any help to sort this out.
