Jesse M and Nancy A are listed in the 1870 Lamar County Alabama, Big Pond PO section, which was in the vicinty of Millport, AL and is now Vail's Beat. (I was born and reared there, but quite a few years later.) I believe Jesse was the son of Jacob Hiram Vail Sr and Sarah Marilza Coleman Vail. In the 1870 census Jesse M was age 25, his wife, Nancy A was age 25, daughter Lutitia was age 2 and daughter Emily R was age 7 mos. I believe Nancy A was the daughter of Daniel H Robertson and Mary (possibly Shumake or Shumaker) Robertson. Daniel & Mary were the parents of my great-granddaddy, William Powell Robertson.
Sometime between 1870 and 1880, Jesse had moved to Sunflower County MS and had married Tillithe Vail during the census year which was 1880. In the 1880 census, Jesse was age 35 and Tillithe (born in Arkansas) was age 21. The four children were as follows: Lutitia (age 12, Emma (age 10), Mahala (age 9), William (age 7), Jesse (age 4) and Daniel (age 2 and born in MS). Jesse's wife, Nancy A Robertson, must have died between 1878 (the year son Daniel was born) and 1880 (when the census was taken). She may have been buried in Sunflower County Mississippi.
On page 315 of the Pickens County Heritage book under the article entitled “John Shaw”, the following comment(s) are made:
“John Henry Shaw, the eldest child (of John Lawley Shaw and Permelia Ann Agnew) was born on October 12, 1862, and married LuTisha Eliza Jane Vail on October 28, 1885 in Lamar Co., AL. Tisha was the daughter of Jesse M Vail. Her mother was a Robinson.”
I found the record of their marriage either on the internet or a CD of Lamar County Alabama marriages. It stated “J H Shaw married Lucretia Vail October 29, 1885 in Lamar County by Justice of the Peace, J H Caldwell." The reference was O.S. Pg 69.
Lutisha (Loutisha) Eliza Jane Vail Shaw (date of birth from death certificate is October 16, 1881) died of Arteriosclerosis on July 9, 1954, at Rt 5, Nashville, Arkansas (Howard County). She had been sick for nine years. (My great-granddaddy, William Powell Robertson, suffered from the same heritary disease.) The informant on the death certificate was Jesse Shaw. Latimer Funeral Home of Nashville, AR was in charge. Burial was at Center Point Cemetery, in the city of Center Point, Howard County, Arkansas on July 11, 1954.
I hope someone has additional information on the family of Jesse Malcolm Vail and his descendants which they will share with me. I also would like to know where Nancy A Robertson Vail is buried.
