Hello Peter,
We corresponded by mail a few years back and thought we might be descended from the same Vair line.
I have been to Melrose Abbey and viewed the same stone as you have seen, yet I cannot make the connection to the Vairs listed on it. I am sure they must be related, but I don't know how.
The furthest back I have been able to confirm my Vairs using documents from Register House in Edinburgh is the death registration of my 3xgr grandfather James Vair, husband of Louisa Stewart Ireland, who died in Selkirk in 1855. The registration confirms that he was the son of James Vair and Elizabeth Hatton.
Do you have any further information about the individuals mentioned on the Melrose gravestone, Thomas Vair d. 1835, or James Vair d. 1849?
