I am interested in all these messages, although I am not so very far back. My gr.gr.gr.gr. grandfather James Vair, master gardener, was born in 1771 in Melrose - his parents were James Vair and Nelly Hunter. His son Robert, born 1806, was also a master gardener, at Cardrona Estate between Peebles and Innerleithen, now being developed as a super golf and residential complex. This gardening link is an interesting connection to Ronald's family research. I have no doubt they are all the same family - it is a most unusual surname. In my family it has come down as a christian name - my father's sister is called Vair. I don't think there are too many of these around! I have the Vair family bible from 1800 listing the births of all James Vair's nine children. Is this of any interest to anyone?
