VanBuren;accident;both feet lost 1900sNY

I am trying to find the name of the may who married my ggg-grandfather's ggg-granddaughter, Lois Greene. I am not even positive of where he lived but I highly suspect the Oneonta area of Otsego Co.,.. Lois, as far as I can tell was raised in the Hartwick Seminary Area of Otsego Co.

When Mr.Van Buren was a young boy, helping his father till the land in preparation for seeding,.. they were using one of those old metal plows that are pulled by an ox or a horse (it has two handles kinda like a bicycle - I should know what it was called because I've seen enough of them). It got stuck on a rock or something and in the process of trying to help his father unwedge the thing from the blades, the oxen moved or something happened that severed his feet from his legs. Unbelievably, in my opinion, they knew enough back then to manage to allow him to still live a full life and even marry. Lois is still alive but I have only written to her recently. Since she has been stricken with severe arthritis since a young girl, I doubt she will be able to write back to me. Sure hope to meet her some day.

Being that I obtained this information over the phone from her brother, it is possible and even likely that I do not have the story absolutely correct.

Since I spoke with her brother I have found another connection to Van Buren through a descendant of my ggg-grandfather of a different branch of his children but around the same era & area,.. so my interest grows with this surname.

Lois is the daughter of Ruth A. Houghton and Russell Greene who was a Lutheren Pastor of that area. I would like to think that the Van Buren farm was in the town of Maryland but, again, I have no evidence. Lois was one of 4 children. Other surnames associated with this particular circle of kin are: Hunt, Henderson, Dettling, Conklin, Perkins, Buechner, Dickhart, Luther, Dingee, Noethlig, Lehr, McAvoy, Clapsaddle, and Young. Please keep in mind though,.. many of these names are associated with the children of Lois's Aunts or Uncles but it was a small community.

The only clue I can give to the date range is that Lois's grandfather, Dorr E. Houghton, was born either 9/10/1874 (according to Houghton bible notes) or in 9/13/1872 (according to his obituary). I believe Lois's mother was probably the last of the 5 children born: Homer Houghton, Robert Milton Houghton, Alberta Houghton (who died as a little girl), Simeon Flint Houghton (who was known as "Flint"), and then Ruth A. Houghton who married Lois's father.

If you know the name of this man and his parents,.. and perhaps a date to share to get me started, it will be deeply appreciated. I have searched for months with no new information and have yet to hear from any kin in regard to this matter.

,... Rebecca
