I've been gatherine materials on unrelated families (early Dutch only) to search for some lost ancestors in other lines through marriage. Van Buren is not one of them but there are connections to Jans/Jansen/Cooper aka Van Permerant/and Bogaert/Bogart. I have been weeding out a book "History of Cornelis Maessen van Buren " by Harriett C. Waite Van Buren Peckham, A.B., M.D. Brooklyn NY; New York Tobias A. Wright Printer & Publisher 1913. Although I'm finding conflicting information, generally it seems like a good guide. To anyone who is new to genealogy, please don't take anything you see as gospil, you'll have to find the documents yourself to back up what follows in order to be certain. Anyway, I didn't know if anyone here would be interested in this. The book is always for sale at eBay on CD, it can be read with use of Adobe Acrobat 6.0 - There are hundreds of pages, I'm quitting at page 53 (for now), so please realize I do not have children listed for many of the people in the following tree, let alone other desc. With the exception of dates beginning with the word Bef. & Aft. which I did for my use only and a few LDS notes, this is the research of Harriett (above)- Also note that I've found my FTM program splits years for any dates that involve Jan or Feb. so you will find the continuation of a birth, marriate, or death date in the location area. So, far this is what I've read through: Descendants of Cornelis Maessen Van Buren Generation No. 1 1. CORNELIS MAESSEN1 VAN BUREN was born Bef. 1620 in Was of Burmalsen of Gelderland., and died 1648 in bur. at Papsknee, Van Rensselaer property, New York. He married CATALYNJE MARTENSEN 1635-1636 in Holland. Notes for CORNELIS MAESSEN VAN BUREN: This is surprising.... turns out I have a book on this guy (on CD) The Van Buren Family. Any dates or such info was taken from this: "History of Cornelis Maessen VanBuren".... who came from Holland to the new Netherlands in 1631 and his descendants, including the genealoty of the family of Bloomingdale who are descended from Maas, a son of Cornelis Maessen...author, Harriett C. Waite Van Buren Peckham, A.B., M.D. Brooklyn NY; New York Tobias A. Wright Printer & Publisher 1913. In this book.... According to documents, Cornelis Maessen Van Bruyen or Burjmalsen/ Buurmalsen / Burren / or Buren are variously spelled in reference to him. He was one of the party who sailed for the New World on the ship Endracht in 1631 (which can also be found in my "Documentary History of NY by O'Callighan". He came from the Province of Gelderland, from the small place called Burmalsen, near the town of Buren, a few miles from the Rhine. Cornelis signed himself as Cornelis Maessen, meaning son of Maes, but wo Maes was, no records reveal. As Marten, the son of Cornelis, was the first to use the surname of van Buren, it has been assumed that this is proof of Cornelis having been born at or near Buren. (of course, if you have done a pinch of research you've run across the name Rensselaer... Killian Van Rensselaer being original owner of the Rensselaer Patent that covered abt. 50x25 miles of land)... There is an old document that states "May 27 1631, a number of persons, among whom was Cornelis Maesen van Buyrmalsen, signed an agreement for three years to Killian van Rensellaer estates for services thereon - paid 1st year Sixty pounds, 2nd year seventy pounds, 3rd year Eighty pounds, and in hand Twelve pounds in advance. " See this book for history and descendant. There’s some neat information to send you back in time. Will add that on Aug 12 1662, Jan Verbeeck, formerly councilor of the colony of Renssellaerswyck, and Cornelis Theuenissen Bo, formerly a magistrate of Fort Orange (Albany) and the village of Beverwyck, made a joint affidavit that Cornelis Maessen and his wife had died about 14 years ago and were both buried on the same day, leaving the aforesaid five children, over whom the said Cornelis Theunisz Bos & Theunis Direxsz (Van Vechten) inhabitants of the Colony, have thus far been gaurdians. Bos having come here in 1636 on the ship Rensselaerwyck in the services of said Cornelis Maessen. There is evidence that Cornelis Maessen returned to Holland at the expiration of this 3 year contract, married there and then came back to this country in 1636. The name of his farm was Papsknee. Children of CORNELIS VAN BUREN and CATALYNJE MARTENSEN are: 2. i. HENDRICK CORNELISSEN2 VAN BUREN, b. June 30, 1637, on ship Rensselaerwyck, voyage from Holland to Albany NY; d. Unknown. ii.
