In January of 1933 Helen (Hillis) Bruce of Otsego County NY interviewed 93 year old Mary VanBuren , widow of Jared Collier. A copy of this testimonial was given to me by Donald and Marion Salisbury (Helen’s daughter) of Cooperstown, NY and I wish to share it with Van Buren researchers. Helen’s notes were as follows:
Jan. 20, 1933. Statement made by Mary Van Buren, widow of Jared Collier. She will be 93 years of age February 22, 1933. She is totally blind, but her memory and mind are clear.

“My father was Harmon Van Buren. His wife was Betsey Oliver. They are buried in South Jefferson, NY. Brothers and sisters of Harmon Van Buren were : Tobias, Abraham, Peter, Maria, Rebecca, Betsey and Tina.
Tobias Van Buren m. Sally Clark. Lived at Summit, NY.
Abraham Van Buren m. Hannah ? Lived at Mt. Vision, NY
Peter Van Buren m. Catherine Oliver.
Maria Van Buren was the first wife of Andrew Lape. Lived at Summit. NY
Rebecca Van Buren m. Andrew Salisbury
Betsey Van Buren m. Andrew Oliver
Tina Van Buren was the second wife of Adrew Lape.”

“Children of Harmon Van Buren and Betsey Oliver were:
Mary Van Buren b. Feb. 22, 1840 m. Jared Collier
Hannah Van Buren m. William Bullock
Margaret Van Buren died at age 18, never married.
Abraham Van Buren never married, Civil War Vet.
Peter Van Buren never married , Civil War Vet.
Jacob Van Buren m. Mary Buck
Philip Van Buren m. Amelia Goodenough
Tina Van Buren m. James Salisbury (West Fulton, NY)
Millie Van Buren m. Joseph Swarthout
Phebe Van Buren d. at age 60, m. Abram Osterhout”

This information is significant because it is well documented that Rebecca Van Buren was d/o John Van Buren (b. 1764, d. 1844) and Hannah Pembroke who lived for a while in Shodack, and later in the town of Luterenville, in Summit, Schoharie Co. NY. This is thus the only record that I have ever come across to list the children of John and Hannah. The two sons of Harmon Van Buren, Abraham and Peter Van Buren, were killed in the Civil War while serving with the 144 th infantry regiment from NY. Also serving in this regiment was James Salisbury (no relation to Andrew Salisbury) – the husband of Tina Van Buren . Millie Van Buren’s real name was Lucinda Van Buren. I have the descendants of all of these families and I am willing to share information. Hope this is of some use to Van Buren researchers. Ron Salisbury
