Meaning of Vandegrift?

The family is of Dutch origin and originally settled in New Amsterdam when it was a Dutch colony before the English took it over at which time most of the family members moved to Bucks Co. PA and some on to Delaware and a few to Maryland.
A number of years ago before the internet was what it is today the was a Newsgroup for Dutch research and I then asked the origin of the name.A person in Netherlands (I forget his name now - it has been 10+ years) responded and told me the actual spelling of the name is Van Der Grift and the Van=from, Der=the and Grift=a small river, creek, canal, or other small flowing stream. He also to me that in all probability the family was originally from North Holland (Nord Holland in Dutch) which is low country near the sea with Nord Holland being a section of present day Netherands.
If it had been a German name it would have been Von, not Van, with the meaning of both words being the same.
Hope this helps.
