Kathleen, I live in southern lower Michigan. You simply wouldn't believe how many VanDerCook family members either settled here or came through on their way west. The founder of the Michigan State Police was Roy Clark Vandercook. The founder of the village of Vandercook Lake (located south of Jackson) was Henry H. Vandercook. Both were descendants of Cornelius and Marya (MANDEVILLE) VanDerCook. Isaac Vandercook came to Monroe Co., MI in 1835 to be with his children and died there in 1838 at around the age of 81. Then of course there was all the intermarrying that went on...enough to give a genealogist fits! I am in the process of getting an email address that I can post here. It would probably be a good idea for us to stay in touch because I have a lot I'd love to share with you!
My 4th great grandfather was Henry VanDerCook (1751-1813, married Anna FRANCISCO). Back in 1991, I was admitted to the DAR on the basis of his service in the Revolutionary War. I was the first of his female descendants to do this so I knew that I needed to do a very meticulous job. Well, I really caught the bug and just kept right on going. All tolled, I've been collecting VanDerCook family data for about 22 years now.
