Chuck, thanks for the reply.
I haven't seen any primary source at all which states specifically that Henry Van Dyke married Amy Freeman. Or even that he married Amy Blanks. We can infer from a 1758 item that she was married again (probably to Henry Van Dyke, and we certainly know Henry Van Dyke had a wife Amy in 1761 who, as I said, had Blanks ties... but again, this is all circumstantial which has been pieced together). There may be something more direct out there, but if so people are doing a fantastic (and cruel) job of hiding it from the rest of us. There is, as I already said, a lot of individual sources which add up.
I went to LVA and got every drop of Lunenburg county material and added it to Brunswick county and Mecklenburg county material and added all of that to Granville (NC) county material.
The first line of my post, I think, says it all. No primary with those specific names, plenty of circumstantial evidence.
Having since found the first part of Henry Freeman's will, I note that he gave her a slave "Sal" who is still with the Van Dykes in 1783 tax lists...
I guess I kind of resent the fact that apparently some folks have known these things for a while and not done a good job of sharing source data, just their conclusions - Brian Bivona being a notable exception.
I'd like to think that I'm in the camp of trying to save other people who aren't lucky enough to have an LVA handy from wondering where this data is coming from. AND to provide a bit of a timeline for her life, which I also have never seen articulated anywhere.
What doesn't come through in my post, unfortunately, is the fact that it was actually a web page I built on my computer with links to the relevant pages from the Lunenburg county order books or minute books, tithe lists, etc. for every statement. I am happy to share those off-list.
I'm also happy for you to contribute any relevant primary source info you've found, if only to check if I may have something you don't and vice versa. Pretty sure others would appreciate it too.
My grandfather's great grandmother was a Van Dyke - Mary Jane Van Dyke who married George W Coley and who died in Missouri in 1916. I was very happy to finally put some sources to the assertions, to give an outline of Amy Freeman (Blanks) Van Dyke's life, and (not yet posted) to find some information on Henry Freeman's wife's (Prudence Jones) ancestry by John A Brayton in The Virginia Genealogist vol 43 number 3 and vol 45 number 1 since Henry's own is usually improperly stated.
Take care,
Kelly in Va.
