Cornelius Northrup Vanhosen was my gg grandfather. He came to IA in the 1840's and settled in Marion County IA in or near what became the town of Pella which is a Dutch community. He moved to Madison County sometime in the 1860's and died 5/28/1876. He is buried in the St. Charles, IACemetery. A picture of his grave is available at this address http://iowagravestones.org/gs_view.php?id=31301http://iowagravestones.org/gs_view.php?id=31301
The 1860 US Census says NY is his birth state. I have not been able to determine who his parents were. He married Almira Echols who was born in VA. Her mother Mary Echols lived with them and is also buried at the St Charles cemetery. Her grave can be seen at http://iowagravestones.org/gs_view.php?id=31301http://iowagravestones.org/gs_view.php?id=31301
My mother said he came from Holland with two other brothers and purchased land on Manhattan Island. Mom claimed that Vanhosen descendants believed their ancestors had been cheated out of their land and they brought a lawsuit against the City of New York in the 1920's. I have not been able to confirm this.
I would love to know if anyone has info on any of this or has heard anything similar to this story.
