Re: the Vanatta family of Lewis County, NY, early 1800s
See Revolutionary War Pension Application #W18,193 of “Samuel Van Netter or Van Etter or Van Atta” and wife Elizabeth, dated April 20, 1837. Jacob Van Atta of Watson in Lewis County, NY, states that “Elizabeth Van Atta of Watson is his mother, and that his father, Samuel Van Atta (or as his father spelled his name Van Etten) died in the year 1815...[T]hat his father wrote his name ‘Van Etten’ or ‘Van Netten’ [B]ut that his children have usually written their names ‘Van Atta’ and the name is now usually so written. That his said mother’s mind has been so much impaired by reason of old age that she had not been able for a number of months to converse coherently upon any subject and wholly incompetent to make a declaration to obtain the benefits of the provisions of he act of Congress...[T]hat his mother’s maiden name was Elizabeth Becker, that his said father resided during the Revolutionary war and for sometime after in the Town of Palatine, Montgomery County, New York....” Elizabeth died May 17, 1837 in Watson, leaving two sons, Jacob and Peter Van Netter.

Children of this couple were listed as Samuel (July 1770), Johannes (October 11, 1781), and Elisabeth (October 11, 1790). Records of an earlier marriage between a Samuel Van Etten and Maria show the following births: Samuel (December 12, 1760), Aarie (March 5, 1762), Jacobus (April 14, 1764) and Elisabeth (June 6, 1766) [Dutch Reformed Church, Stone Arabia, NY]. Elsewhere, a Samuel Van Netta (unclear which Samuel) married Catharina Schnell on December 12, 1790, and their children were: Unnamed child (June 3, 1791), Catharina (December 18, 1793), John (March 20, 1796), and Samuel (June 29, 1798).
