LYDIA L. VARNEY
The death of Lydia L. Varney occured at the home of her nephew, John H. Coffin, 49 Bradbury Street, Old Town, at the age of 89 years. Mrs. Varney was a former resident of Bangor and was one of the oldest members of the Columbia street Baptist church, in which she maintained membership up to the time of her death, always reporting at the annual meetings of the church after leaving Bangor and on several occasions coming to Bangor from Massachusetts to attend meetings. She was well known throughout New England on account of her affiliation with the W.C.T.U. having attended many state conventions as a delegate from this organization, and was also well known on account of her activities in church work.
After leaving Bangor Mrs. Varney made her home in Massachusetts up to within two years, when a desire to spend her remaining days near the church of her choice caused [to] return to the state of Maine, and since that time she has made her home with her nephew in Old Town. She became a member of the Columbia street church Dec. 1, 1882, and was constant in her devotion to her faith.
She is survived by four children:
Mrs. Marcia L. Priest of Millinocket, Mrs. Abbie Hillman of Penacook, N.H., Mrs. Delia M. Carlson of Brockton, Mass., and Charles L. Varney of Boston.
Funeral services will be held at the home of her nephew, John H. Coffin, Old Town, and will be conducted by Rev. Benjamin Beatty. The body will be placed in the tomb at Forest Hill cemetery Burial will be in Lowell, Maine in the spring.
