Greetings!

The VAUGHAN family was and still is significant in Merthyr Tydfil, CF48 3BN. It shouldn't be that hard to find descendants. One of the thoroughfares in town is named VAUGHAN Street and the clock tower in the church is the VAUGHAN Tower. Ronald VAUGHAN is a current member of the Tydfil County Borough Integrated Children's Services Committee.

Besides the good, some members of the family are notoriously infamous. Thomas VAUGHAN incited a riot there on June 3, 1831 which led to the death of twelve people including some of the rioters and some of the constabulary that was called to quell the melee. Thomas was originally sentenced to death but that was later reduced to life imprisonment.

His family's prominence may have kept him from being exiled to Australia as this was in the middle of the period when serious criminals were sent away for a minimum of seven years, but, twenty or more for murder.

Ralph
