A minor correction. The VAUGHAN clock tower is not in Merthyr Tydfil; it's in Neath Port Talbot. When the clock needed technology updating and major structural repairs, the town asked the citizenry for contributions. When the response was virtually nothing, the VAUGHAN family stepped in and made up all the costs. The city renamed the clock for this conspicuous generosity.
In 2001, another member of the VAUGHAN family terribly embarrassed them. A female VAUGHAN that was an employee of the NPT council program that awarded housing benefits went to jail for 14 months for defrauding the program.
The phone code for Merthyr Tydfil is 01685. As of today, there are 42 VAUGHAN listings in The Phone Book for Glamorganshire including several in Merthyr Tydfil.
