Okay, I'm fighting to make sense of it all but I think you were onto something. I can trace Joseph N Verner as the father of my grandfather John Newton Verner through around 1890 or so, but then for the 1880 census and before he disappears off the face of the earth!
In the 1880 census a Newton J. Verner appears with a wife Mary (ages and names match to later census records) but then I can't find anything for 1860 or 1870 and then only Joseph N Varner (no Verners) before that but the birth year of 1845 and Gwinnett County GA match with the Newton J. Verner. Must have been some fight! Hopefully I didn't get that all confused.
Come across any Josephs or Newtons? I'm trying to lookup the other males in the family to see if there is a pattern. If the lineage is correct then it almost looks like George W. Varner changed to Verner.
Also discovered that George won a lottery draw on Cherokee land in 1830's I think. That made my day lol! Well sorry if I've totally confused you now. If you don't see any link between what we are both looking for just let me know (I'm starting to get a headache lol!)
