Vernons of Meigs/Bledsoe/Monroe Counties, TN
For many years, I have been researching John Vernon of Bradley County, TN.Aunt Gertrude Hooper said his father was Thomas Vernon. When Aunt Gertrude did her research, she tried to tie into Captain Richard Vernon, but his son John Dagg Vernon does not work out.John Vernon appears in Bradley County in 1840, 1860, in Jackson County, AL in 1870, back in James County, TN in 1880 with a granddaughter, Maggie Andrews. He married Caroline Carter and in 1900 she is living with her daughter Mary Jane Vernon Samples in Bradley
County. In 1830 in Thomas Vernon's household of Monroe County, TN is a male born about 1815-1820.But Harrison Vernon in Bledsoe County, TN also has a male that age.Harrison died in Meigs County, TN by March 6, 1837 because Col. Miles Vernon was appointed Administrator of Harrison Vernon deceased.Bledsoe County, TN records include:Charles J. Love had 2500 acres on Crow Creek in Bledsoe County, TN which was half of Stockley Donelson's Grant: Feb. 12,1818 Fairfax, VA Robert Vernon in Bledsoe County, TN 98 acres for $350.00; Obadiah C. Vernon bought Dec. 10, 1818 in Fairfax, VA land in Bledsoe Co., TN 102 acres for $350.00; Thomas Vernon bought from John Tollett 45 acres on Feb. 2, 1819 for $75.00.Robert's purchase stated his land touched Obadiah and Thomas Vernon's land.Harrison and Miles Vernon bought 293 acres August 1, 1823. Miles and Harrison Vernon and John Billingsley became involved in land sales of 5000 acres owned by Robert Maitland of New York: John Hutcheson bought 72 1/3 acres and William Hutcheson bought 144 2/3 acres on May 25, 1825.Nov. 13, 1826 Harrison Vernon sold 50 acres Bledsoe County to Nathaniel Painter for $80.00.August 1828 Harrison sold to Hercules Ogle 27 acres for $81 in Bledsoe County.Robert Maitland of New York by his attorney John McIver sold 65 acres on both sides of Sequatchee Creek for $227.50 to Harrison Vernon on March 9, 1828.Harrison sold 15 acres of that land to William Hutcheson on Sept. 26, 1833 for $100.May 2, 1837 Miles reported sales of Harrison Vernon property in Bledsoe County of $212.84 1/2; supplemental of $569; supplemental June 29, 1839 totaling $1781.84 1/2; in one record he mentions boarding a nephew with D. Swift for $14.00; Miles mentions Mary, William, Robert, Jr., Polly, T. and J Vernon.A large amount of $106.00 is charged to Polly (mother?) as an asset to Joseph McCorkle and a separate charge of $8.00 for Mary Vernon to Joseph McCorkle. So, family may be Polly (wife of Harrison and dau. of Robert Vernon), Mary (dau.), William, T. and J. (sons?).I found John Vernon in Meigs County with a child in school the right age for the John in Bradley County.I can't prove definitely, but Aunt Gertrude had information from Caroline Carter Vernon who lived into the 1900's and was born 1815 and John Vernon was born about the same time of 1815-16.I admit that her information about Capt. Richard marrying a Wooten cannot be proven: the Vernon researchers addressed this issue by stating "Catherine B. may have been his [Richard's] second wife.We do not know. However, our genealogists (We have 20 on our Board of Compilers) do not believe that Capt. Richard married an Elizabeth or Betsy Wooten as the DAR records indicate. We feel that RICHARD VERNON, son of Lt. Issac of Rockingham Co., N.C., married Betsy Wooten and somebody [our Aunt Gertrude for one] confused the two Revolutionary War soldiers from Rockingham County."I tried to tie John Vernon of Bradley County, TN to this Richard through Lt. Isaac but was unable to.So, I believe John was a son of Harrison Vernon who was son of Thomas Vernon of Monroe County, TN who died abt. 1841. In the 1830 Bledsoe County, TN Census on the same page with Harrison is a John Carter (later in Bradley County 1840 Census on same page is John Carter) and on the same page is William Vernon.
