Hi Philip, and all the other Vians out there!
Posting my first message. My family live in Kent. My father was Gaston Solari Denis Vian the son of Denis Vian. Denis was French and at the turn of the century was a renowned solo violinist, winning the Prix de Rome.
Sadly he died in his fifties of peritinitus.
My father (half French, as Denis married an english Governess in Portugal, Dora Curtis) was an officer in the British Army and after escaping from prisoner of war camp in Italy, crossed to Switzerland and eventualy made his way back to England.
He stayed in the Army, met my mother Joan Carr who was in the ATS working to Eisenhower in Frankfurt/Berlin. Later my father became a Barrister but also died in his fifties. I am quarter French and I now have three children, two sons (15:12)and a daughter (8). My wife is a school teacher in Kent.
My mother (now 79) has a whole geneology of our line and during my life I have often been questioned as to whether I am related to Philip Vian, Admiral of the Fleet/HMS Cossack etc. (any relation of yours?) As well as on the french side, Boris Vian.
All my french family resided in the South of France, Alp Martime, but sadly have now all passed away. The only other English Vian that I have ever met is a Jeff Vian in Bristol who was a cameraman for the BBC Antiques Roadshow at the time.
In the sixties I recall that my family were visited by an Elvira Vian from Dallas in Texas. It looks like that in the States there are quite a few Vians. My first visit to the Vian sites was quite surprising.
I do know that in the West Country (UK) there are quite a number of Vians clustered about, but elsewhere few and far between.
I think I might have spoken many years ago to another Vian who was a Bank Manager (Nat West I think).
That's a very very quick overview. It is an interesting name and never fails to raise questions from other people, let alone the wide variety of misspellings and pronunciations. We us the VY-AN pronunciation although the family name was the VE-AN and we still use it when in France, which we visit regularly.
Hope to hear from any Vians around the world.
Regards
Nigel Denis Vian (not DENNIS but pronounced DEN-E)
