THE VIDLER FAMILY
The earliest known descendant of the “Vidler’s can be dated back to a man named Honfroi Vis De Loup (Vis de Loup is bastard Latin for fox/wolf face), a French night from Normandy, who under the command of William the conqueror, fought against the English in the Battle of Hastings in 1066.The earliest trace of the Vidler family dates back to John Vidler in 1630, going back 12 generations.
The name of Vidler (and its earlier versions Vidlar and Vitler) can be found in English parish registers in Sussex and Kent from their inception in the mid 1500’s.It is possible the family was established in the area prior to this.
The Australian line commences on 5/11/1838 with the arrival in Sydney of the immigrant ship ‘MAITLAND’, containing no less than 22 members of the family spanning 3 generations (this number does not include the 2 children of the senior William’s second wife from her first marriage).
The MAITLAND left Gravesend on 24/6/1838. Of the original Vidler party of 26, scarlet fever and typhus claimed the following.
Sarah, aged 15, daughter of William and Harriet
Henry, aged 1yr 7 months, son of Edwin and Mary
David, aged 11 months
Thomas, aged 11 months
The entire party settled initially on the south coast of NSW, in the areas around Dapot and Jambaroo.Later some families moved to the Canberra area, other branches moved to Crookwell, and a large contingent moved to the north coast.
The fonder of the Australian line is William (snr). The following details are known about him.
Born 1775 at Battle, Sussex to William and Mary Vidler
Married 1. 29/12/1796 at Sandhurst, Kent to Mary Copper, who was buried at Sandhurst 27/9/1829.
2. 15/1/1832 at Sandhurst to Mary Maynard, who died 6/7/1862 at Shellharbour.
Died 22/5/1856 at Jambaroo
Only William, John, James, Edwin and Sarah emigrated on the MAITLAND.Stephen followed 3 years later, arriving 5/11/1841 on the FAIRLIE, with his wife and 4 eldest children.George and Kezia Steadman arrived 14/2/1842 on the SIR EDWARD PAGET with their 4 eldest children. There is no evidence yet that Mary ever came to Australia.
