Your grandfather was a Crew Chief aboard an Army helicopter UH-1D (# 66-16830) that was shot down by enemy fire 8km NE of the northern port city of Chu Lai. He was with the 71st Assault Helicopter Company, 14th Aviation Battalion, 16th Avn Group, of the Americal Division.

On-board (and all KIA) were the pilot-WO John Sherin (a Canadian), the aircraft commander-1LT Fred Washburn, door gunner-SP4 Donald Wester.........and a wounded infantryman SP4 Charles Smidstra who they were evacuating.

This helo was supporting the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment 196th Brigade) who had made contact with a large enemy force.

I show SP4 Walsh arrived in-country on 29 April 1968.

Hope this helps.
