According to the Oxford English Dictionary of Surnames (1997), VINEY is a variant of FINNEY. Among the earliest recorded instances of the name is Thomas ate Vynhaghe in 1327 in Sussex. The name is thought to be derived from various place names such as Finney in Lancashire, Fenny Rough in Worcestershire, Fenay in Yorkshire, Vinals Farm in Sussex and Viney's Wood in Kent.
The surname shouldn't be confused with VINE(S), VIGNE(S), VINER or VYNER which are thought to be derived from 'vine-grower' or 'worker at a vineyard'.
I hope this information is of interest.
