Tom,
The only James VIRGIN that I could find in the 1850 Census of MO (when your James would have been 1-2 yrs. old) was in the household of William VERDEN (the name VIRGIN was sometimes spelled that way and I know that this William VERDEN was actually William VIRGIN).Here is the listing:
1850 Census - Cape Girardeau Co., MO
William VERDEN, age 45, b. GA
Elizabeth","24, b. MO
Nelson","20, b. MO
Serena","19, b. MO
William","12, b. MO
James","2, b. MO
Nancy","2, b. MO
Elizabeth","8(?), b. MO
The above James could be yours. The 1850 census could have been taken later in the year than the one in 1870 which could account for his being 2 instead of 1 in 1850.
This is not to say that this James is yours....only that I could not find another James of the age that yours wouldhave been in 1850 in any of the 1850 MO censuses.CapeGirardeau Co. is very close to Mississippi Co. and therewere also VIRGIN families in Scott Co. which is located between Cape "G" and Miss'i Cos..
Something to work on.I would suggest finding your James in the 1860 Census if he was still alive.
I think that it is interesting that one of his children was named William Edward VIRGIN.Could the "William" have come from the 1850 Census William VERDEN.The name "Edward" was also used in some of those VIRGIN families who were in that area of SE Missouri.
Maybe this is something to work on.....will keep looking for you.
Dolores
