This is very interesting... The search for my Vogan family roots began about 40 years ago by my great aunt Mary Vogan.Subsequently my parents visited Cavan and found not only Vogan's but a very strong family resemblance. However they were told that the Vogan name was NOT Irish (as you suggest), but in fact Scotish... no mention of Wales.
They claimed the name was originally Voganye (I may not be spelling that correctly since the story was told to me verbally 30+ years ago).
It was these Vogan's of Cavan that suggested the Danish connection believing that the Scotish line moved to Cavan sometime in the 1600's.In my family.... blond and red hair is comman in youth which certainly does suggest a Celtic heritage somewhere.
As for Vogan reunions there is one held in Pennslyvania every year. And appearently for the last 100 years.I have never attended, but in corresponence with them a couple of years ago they too believe that they came from Cavan. In fact originating with Samual Haeshaw Vogan, my ancestor.. however there is nothing in out history that suggest that any of Samual's line ever went to the US directly from Ireland.
On a completely different but interesting deviation of Vogan history check out the website "tombstone", the official website of Tombstone Arizona... then click on Vogan's Alley Bar.It was a bowling alley in Tombstone at the time of the "Gunfight at the OK Corral"... and if our family tree is to be believed, The Mr. Vogan who ran it was a brother of my great great Grandfather. Even more interesting is that after the Vogan's went bankrupt in the 1930's the Vogan Alley Bar was purchased by Jim Elderberry (sic) who told me before he died that it was his belief that in fact the Erps and Doc Holiday actually set out for the gunfight at the corral from the Vogan Ally Bar... though he had no real proof, only tradition to support his claim (and it is a tourist spot, so I suppose it was in his interest to make the claim, though he semed sincere when he related the story to me).
It is interesting as well that you are at a Bible College, in our branch of the Vogan's we have numerous Protestant Ministers, a number of University Professors, one who was an acknowledged Hebrew Expert of some note.
I am enjoying this exchange, and hope other Vogan's join in to solve this riddle.
I am also available directly at "[email protected]" where my bad spelling can at least be spell-checked before sending, and reside in Toronto.
