Voltz changed from Boltz? - Chicago
I'm investigating the possibility that the Voltz name that is connected to my family in Chicago was changed from Boltz. The family in question attended St. Boniface Catholic Church. They were from Gnojau, West Prussia (now Gnojewo, Poland). They were of German ancestry. They show up as Godparents in church records and the name there is spelled Boltz. Family stories say that my grandfather used his cousin's union card to get a job as a teamster. The cousin's name was J. Voltz, so my grandfather assumed the name Voltz at work. My grandfather's real surname was Burcikowski. I've just located a website in Germany that lists ancestors from Gnojau and the surnames Boltz and Borczikowski are listed as being from Gnojau and immigrating to Chicago. I'm interested in hearing from anyone connected to these names in Chicago.
