Hello Tim,
I read with interest your question and went back to my notes on Gilbert Voris. Here is what I have documented on my Gilbert:
Born Abt. April 1758 near Harlingen, N.J.
Died March 1797 in Montour County, PA.
His mother was Nelltje --?--
His father was Auke Okey Voorhees b. abt. 1726 and died 1799 in Montgomery Township, N.J.This connection is important because the father out lived the son.
Gilbert was the fourth of nine children and about 1786 he married Jane McClanathan in New Jersey. They had four documented children:
James b. 1787
John b. 1791
Eleanor b. 1793 (this is my line)
Elizabeth b. 1795
My research has shown that Gilbert moved to PA sometime between 1780-1784.
A deed to settle the estate of Okey Voorhees, father of Gilbert, dated May 1816 lists James, John, Eleanor (Crawford) and Elizabeth as children of Gilbert Voorhees deceased of Northumberland Co., PA.This is found in Somerset Co., N.J. deeds book, page 393-4 which lists all the descendants of Okey along with the descendants of his deceased son Gilbert. I checked the record again and there is no mention of a Hannah or the surname Hittle.
Your Hannah may indeed be a connection to the Voris line as I found many Voorhees' did settle in other states especially after the Rev. war as their fields in New Jersey were tore up from the war. Also there is more than one Gilbert Voris in the same time frame so that may complicate your research.
Some of the spellings of the surname was de Voorhees, or Van Voorhees, Vorhes, Voris, Vorhis, Vorhes, Vors. You can see how the spelling makes it more difficult to trace this line.
I wish I could help you but I have no data to prove a link.Best regards, Carole
