This Danville soldier enlisted into the 14th Iowa Infantry Company G, fought at Fort Donelson and at the famous Hornets' Nest of Shiloh, was taken POW at Shiloh, and died soon afterwards. His body was returned to his parents in Danville:
Pope, John A. Age 22. Residence Tama County, nativity Vermont. Enlisted October 10, 1861. Mustered November 2, 1861. Promoted Sixth Corporal November 2, 1861. Missing in action, taken prisoner and paroled April 6, 1862, Shiloh Tennessee. Died of fever in hospital July 11, 1862, Mound City Illinois. Buried in Pope Cemetery, Danville Vermont.
A diary of one of his soldier companions from Iowa has recently been published by the Traer Iowa museum. ( www.traermuseum.com ) If any of his family still remains in Danville they may be interested in this book, as John Pope is mentioned several times.
