You might have seen the postings around the internet saying Samuel was a son of Absalom Holmes who went from Windsor Co, VT to Butler Co, OH before 1820. Absalom was married to Deborah Williams according to these postings. Another posting says he was married more than once. Do you know if Butler Co, OH has any early wills? Maybe you could find one for Absalom.
I could not find a marriage for Samuel in Butler Co, but maybe he married in a neiboring state. Or, maybe the marriage wasn't recorded. I did find a marriage for his supposed brother William Holmes in 1837 to Mary Ann Cornelius. They live in Butler Co, 1850 and 1860 with what looks like a possible sister Hannah Holmes born c1793/94. Both William and Hannah are shown as born in VT. Hannah is still alive in 1870 so possibly there is a death record for her in Butler Co or another document which might have information.
To get the maiden name of Samuel's wife you might have to track all the children and get marriage and death records for them all. Maybe one of those records will have Elizabeth's maiden name.
If you want to look at the internet sites I found just try googling "Absalom Holmes" or if nothing comes up try "Absolom Holmes". Some sites show only the children born in Windsor Co, but other sites have a more complete list. Maybe you could contact the owners of the websites and ask for their sources.
