You know it to be a fact that your Samuel was born in VT and moved to the area near the OH/IN border. It is also a fact that an Absalom Holmes appears on the VT census Index and later on the Butler Co, OH census index. Also a fact is that a William and Hannah Holmes appear in Butler Co, OH on the census 1850, 1860 and are born in VT. They match the ages given for the William & Hannah in the Giles memorial book. I think it's probably the correct Samuel, but only a record such as a death record, will, or other original document will help prove it. If I were you I would mark Absalom down as Samuel's father with the sources and info you have so far. Maybe you will get more in the future, but I think this is very strong evidence. I have access to the Giles Memorial book if you need any other info from it.
