Diane, several online sources show Roswell's parents as Joseph Adams and Sarah Cary. One tree on rootsweb.com has this info:

Extract from "Vital Records of Rockingham, Vermont & Records of the First Church of Rockingham, Vermont" compiled by Thomas Bellows Peck, published 1902 & 1908
Genealogical Society of Vermont - special publication number 3 1994
Vol II page 573
The births of the children of Joseph and Sarah Adams of Rockingham:
John Adams b. 6 Aug 1798 in Rockingham, Vermont
Jerusha Adams b. 29 Jul 1800 in Rockingham, Vermont
Polly Adams b. 18 Jun 1802 in Rockingham, Vermont
Timothy Merril Adams b. 19 Jan 1805 in Readen (Reading), Vermont
Roswell Burt Adams b. 12 May 1807 in Readen (Reading), Vermont

Now, I did find some supporting evidence. Joseph Adams was a Rev War soldier. There is mention in his Rev War pension file that Joseph died 15 Feb 1844 leaving no widow and that the administrator of his estate was one Roswell B. Adams.

also of note is that the 1840 census of Sherburne, VT shows Roswell Adams age 30s with a family as follows:

one male age 10-15 (a farm hand or an oldest son???)
one male age 90s (probably Joseph Adams, Rev War veteran)
one female age 40s (probably Roswell's wife- age entered wrong??)
one female age 70 (probably Sarah- wife of Joseph)
three females age 0-5
two females age 5-10

we know from the 1850 census that Roswell had at least four daughters that would fit into the categories above. The fifth female could be a child that died or married between 1840-1850 or maybe a boarder.
