Most people know of Francis Bates of Pownal, Vermont, and that his son Stephen Bates moves west and marries Phebe Nichols whose ancestors mainly wind up on Michigan, but few acknowledge that James Bates of Ithaca and Freehold Twp, Warren County, PA is the son of Stephen Bates from a woman named Susan. Now there is some question as to who Susan is? Most list Susan Baker Barnes, but to date no real evidence of who Susan is has come forth, and neither has a grave marker or tombstone. It could be Susan died in Child-birth, or from some disease, or some hardship, no one knows. What I know is that I finally got a copy of the Bates Bible that on one page listed James Bates as the Son of Stephen Bates, and that James was married to ANEY BATES who birth date is the same as Anna Casterline of Ithaca, New York. I know that James married Anna Casterline and that both James and Anna are buried in the Bates section of the Lottsville cemetary in Warren County, PA. The key to following James is the Casterlines of Ithaca, then Isaac Baker who marries Susan Bates daughter of James and Anna. James is found in the census images next to the Casterlines in 1810, 1820, and 1830, until he moves to Warren County around 1835 and is next to Isaac Baker in 1840, or should I say Isaac is next to James? With land being given to veterans of the War of 1812, it is a high probability that James moved west to claim land and his new son-in-law went with him. If you look you can find that map. Rev. Stephen Bates moves west and supposedly ministers to the Indians, as well as his land is sold back to the Natives. I only mention this because without the Bates Bible images the connection to Francis Bates of Pownal Vermont is doubtful, but with Bible pages ... it confirms the Vermont connections. I wonder why so many left to go west? Didn't they leave some Bates behind to work the land? Notify Administrator about this message?
