Patty, Thanks so much for your help in this matter. In continuing a study of this name, I discovered that Guoin/Gouin was a variation on the French 'coin' or 'quoin' with the latter being the archaic form. Both mean "WEDGE". So Aucoin/Gouin (and its variant spellings). With this knowledge we were able to track the family line back to early 1600 France. The 1840 St Albans census was not related, being Immanuel Goyer and the wrong age. However, an interesting side note to this family line is a half white/half native fellow in the Illinois territory named Jean Baptiste du Quoin (of Wedge). The only one in the area who might have fathered this person is Jean Baptiste Gouin (Wedge) dit Champagne who settled in the Illinois French-ruled territory in 1736 and died about 1754. Again - couldn't have done it without you. Ernestina Notify Administrator about this message?
