Hi fellow Genealogy Fans,

I am inquiring about further information in regards to Carl Whelchel (born about 1897 in Missouri) and his family. Thanks to readers' help I was able to create a sketch that needs additional information from others who might have information about him, his wife Bessie Robinson (daughter of E.P.P. Robinson and Burttie Robinson of Washington). I am apologizing up front for this inquiry being long, however I am hoping that it might be helpful to someone researching their tree and that might help them to help me find and connect the missing threads in my family tapestry and story.

The Carl Whelchel that I am inquiring about was apparently born about 1897 in Missouri. He had a father named Samuel M. Whelchel who was born in 1861 in Missouri and who died 27 Jun 1936 in Arkansas. He had a mother who was born Lillian Jane Jones and was born in 1874 also in Missouri and who died 3 January 1966 in Chula Vista, San Diego County, California.

According to the 1910 Census, Carl Whelchel is listed as Carlos Whelchel. He is listed as living with his parents and siblings in Wheatland, Hickory, Missouri. Carl Whelchel's siblings included EArl Whelchel born 26 February, 1898 in Missouri; Avery Whelchel born 15 January, 1900; Paul R. Whelchel born in 1903; Lillian Violet obrn in 1905; Ernest Whelchel born in 1908. His other siblings Carrie M. Whelchel and Bertha M. Whelchel were both born sometime after the 1910 census was taken as they are not listed.

In 1918 Carl Whelchel and his brother Earl D. Whelchel both filed WWI Draft Registration cards in Boulder, Colorado. According to information that a reader provided me, Carl listed S.M. Whelchel as his nearest relative while his brother Earl listed Lilly Whelchel as nearest relative. Apparently during this time, the Whelchel family was living in Boulder, Colorado.

By 1920, Carl's parents, Samuel and Lillian Jane Whelchel and most of the other children had relocated to Bellingham Ward 5, in Whatcom, Washington. Samuel was 58 years old and Lillian Jane was 45 years old. Earl, Paul, Lillian, ERnest, Carrie M. and Bertha were all listed as living with their parents.

During this same time period, from the information that I have so far been able to compile from readers' help and information that I have come across, Carl was married to Adeline Aldrich. I have not been able to find a wedding certificate. According to the 1920 United States Federal Census, Carl and Adeline Whelchel were married and living in Benicia, Solano County, California. At the time Carl was 23 years old, and Adeline was 18 years old and they were renting a place. I believe that Carl was working at the time as an electrician for a tannery. I believe that Carl and Adeline's first child is a son named Raymond, who was born sometime in 1920. I've had difficulty on finding any information on him. I believe that Carl and Adeline were together for a few years and then separated. Unknown to Carl, Adeline was pregnant at the time. Adeline relocated to Southern California, while Carl relocated to the state of Washington, most likely to be with their respective families for support and comfort. Adeline gave birth to a daughter who was born in 1922. Apparently Carl and Adeline had divorced, although I have had trouble finding a divorce certificate.

Adeline, who had relocated to Southern California was left with two young children to raise. She ended up raising her son by herself while her daughter was raised by relatives of Adeline's extended family and was given a different last name. Adeline had minimal contact with her daughter. I know that Carl knew of his son Raymond, however I am not sure if he knew that he had a daughter by Adeline. When her son Raymond had grown up, Adeline married someone else. She did not have any other children.

By 1930, Carl's parents Samuel and Lillian Jane Whelchel and tow of their children had moved from Washington back to Missouri (Center, Hickory County).

Carl stayed in the state of Washington. According to the 1930 U.S. Federal Census, Carl was 36 years old, living in Washington (Kenmore Township, Kent or King County Washington). He was working as a truck driver. Carl was married to Bessie Robinson who was listed as being 21 years old. Carl and Bessie were living with her parents (E.P.P. Robinson who was 66 years old and Burttie Robinson who was 62 years old). Carl and his wife Bessie had a daughter named Nocona or Norma, who was 3 years old at the time. I have been unsuccessful in finding any further information on his wife Bessie, daughter Nocona or Normal, or any other children of theirs. I am wondering if Carl and Bessie stayed married and if they had other childfen. I also wonder if Bessie and Nocona/Norma knew about Carl's prior marriage and his son Raymond and his other daughter.

The last information that I have on Carl Whelchel is that he was living in National City, San Diego County, California when he died in August 1968. I am hoping that some of the readers and genealogy researchers will have some added information that can fill in the gaps and add to the story of Carl Whelchel, including his parents and siblings,in addition to his second wife and family, as well as the missing years from 1930 to 1968 when he passed on.
