HUGH M. PERRY of Fredericksburg, VA

I'm researching my paternal line and haven't been able to get any father back than this couple in Fredericksburg, VA:

PERRY, HUGH M.
B: abt. 1825 in VA.
D: 26 Feb 1904 in Fredericksburg, VA.
Buried: Fredericksburg City Cemetery, burial records but no grave marker.

Married to:

GIBSON, LUCY ANN
B. abt. 1821 in VA.
D: 17 Jan 1894 in Washington, D.C. (Lived with their daughter ELIZABETH PERRY KNIGHT. ELIZABETH'S husband CHARLES KNIGHT was a bricklayer according to the census.)
Buried: Unknown.

There were other PERRYS in Fredericksburg and surrounding counties, but I just can't tie them to my line. Most of the in-town Perrys appear to have had property, as their names appear over and over in the Embrey Index to grantors/grantees. I suspect my Perrys were either poor relations or no relation at all. HUGH M. PERRY is listed in Fredericksburg city directories, city tax lists, and censuses as a laborer.

Unmarried daughter LYDIA PERRY eventually moved D.C. and lived with her sister and brother-in-law, the KNIGHTS. LUCY ANN GIBSON PERRY'S death notice reads as follows:

Free Lance newspaper (Fredericksburg, VA) for 19 Jan 1894 --
"Mrs. Lucy Ann Perry, wife of Mr. Hugh Perry, who removed from this place to Washington a year ago, died Tuesday of consumption, at her home in that city. Her remains were brought to this city and funeral services were held at the Baptist church Thursday evening."

Although Hugh PERRY is buried in the Fredericksburg City Cemetery, there is no listing there for Lucy in the Interment Register. Possibly she is buried in a Baptist cemetery, but if so I can't find her listed.

HUGH and LUCY PERRY had 13 children, 12 daughters and one son (ROBERT). I'm descended from:

PERRY, VIRGINIA ANN "JENNIE"
B: 14 June 1851 in VA.
D: 14 May 1926 in Portland, Multnomah Co, OR.

JENNIE was married three times:

1) JAMES CONLIN - an Irish immigrant who served in the Civil War, Union army, apparently as a "little drummer boy" or possibly as a bugler, or both. 3 children of this marriage; Thomas, Lucy Anne, and James Henry.

2) FRANCIS L. PANCOAST - another soldier and possibly a friend of JAMES CONLIN'S. Four children of this marriage; William, Mary, Kate, and Fred.

3) JOHN KEMP - yet another soldier and possibly a family friend of many years. No children. JOHN died in Portland, OR in 1910.

JENNIE PERRY and first husband JAMES CONLIN moved through AZ to CA and settled in WA Territory after he re-enlisted in the army in 1868. JENNIE raised her children in Port Townsend, Jefferson Co, and Vancouver, Clark Co.

JENNIE'S sister MARTHA L. PERRY also married a Union soldier in Fredericksburg, VA who also re-enlisted in 1868 He was NOAH J. EDGILL and he too was shipped west to AZ and ultimately WA. The two young families both lived in Port Townsend, WA but only the EDGILLS stayed there. MARTHA and NOAH had two sons and two daughters; MINNIE, LAURA, EDWARD ROSS, AND NOAH IRA.

In 1891 VIRGINIA and her sister MARTHA took the train all the way across the country and back from WA to VA to visit their father HUGH in Fredericksburg. Their visit was written up in the Fredericksburg Free Lance newspaper.

I have info and a few photos on the CONLIN/PANCOASTS and would love to share with anyone researching them, especially if you're descended from a line that remained back east and never knew what became of those who went west.

Some of my sources: Federal census, North Carolina Death Certificates online - 1907-1975, Fredericksburg Free Lance 19 Jan 1894, Interment Register for Fredericksburg City Cemetery.
